Although I never got to meet your (Dad) personally. I have shared many memories of (Him) with (Bill) during our service in (Vietnam) and through correspondence since returning home.

Louis E. Steffes

Funeral services celebrating the life of Louis E. Steffes, age 85, of Waite Park will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. Louis died on March 5, 2010 at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by his family. The Rev. Bruce Timm will officiate. Burial will be in North Star Cemetery with full military honors.
Family and friends may call between 4-8 pm on Monday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and after 9:30 am on Tuesday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7 pm on Monday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Louis was born on Feb. 25, 1925 in St. Cloud to Joseph and Mary (Dambly) Steffes. He served in the US Army in the 28th Division, 110th Infantry during WW II. He participated in the landing on Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day, marched in the parade to liberate Paris, was wounded by German mortar while attacking German pill boxes on the Siegfried line, spent 18 months in the Shick Army Hospital in Clinton, Iowa and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He married Renee Varner on Feb. 4, 1946 in St. Cloud. He owned and operated El–Jay Plumbing and Heating until he retired in 1974. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waite Park American Legion Post 428, life member of VFW Post 428 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years Renee, sons Jack (Ruth) of Sartell, Les (Kathy) of St. Cloud; grandchildren: Kim, Kristi, Heather, Derek and Scott; three great grandchildren; sister Dorothy Carlson of Alexandria, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son William who died while serving in the Army in Vietnam in 1968, 11 brothers and sisters.
Memorials are preferred.
