What does one say to cover the entire emotions of loosing such a sweet brother ? You think one minute your going to help Diane out by helping pick him up from a clinic appointment and return him to His favorite place “Sal’s Bar “ and within a very short span , your at a ER room and I’m whispering in his ear “ Dale, you have been a great brother to me , and I am going to miss you on this earth…. but enjoy your time meeting your creator God and seeing Mom and uDad, and all the other family who will greet you!
Just doesn’t seem real you won’t be sitting in your chair at Sal’s !
This night was just a glimpse at the visitation of the impact you had on so many people with your love and kindness , for the last 52 years as you worked the bar. It’s called Amazing Genuine Love that we all will cherish in our hearts forever big brother…. rest now and know that you were LOVED by this SAINT JOE community ,Family, Friends , Johnnies and Bennies…. and especially ME….. your little sister Margie!!

Dale was born on October 22, 1946 in St. Cloud to Marcellus Sr. “Sal” and Margaret (Studer). He married Diane “Bip” Klein on May 25, 1977 in Collegeville. Dale worked at Pliam’s Linoleum and Bernick’s before purchasing Sal’s Bar and Grill from his parents in 1971. He met thousands of people including Johnnies and Bennies in those 52 years and many would often return to visit and catch up on old times. Dale loved cooking! He was happiest at Sal’s. Dale enjoyed fishing! He seldom had trouble finding someone to make the trek to Backus with him for a couple days each week during the summer.
Dale is survived by his wife, Diane; children, Kyle (Lori), Meghan, and Michael of St. Joseph, Katie (Nick) Willenbring of Cold Spring; Craig (Becca) Peterson from his first marriage; siblings, Sr. Rose Margaret, Dennis (Marsha), Doris (Jim) Goodrum, Marcellus Jr. (Darlene), Margie (Scott) Bjorklund, Wilma (Jim) Schwegel, Noemi (Harry) Aylesworth, and Nita Schneider; grandchildren, Mallory, Anika, Jaxson, and Ashton, Daren and Brenna; and extended family and numerous friends.

Dale was so welcoming to me and my family over the years! He and Diane and Kyle shared friendship with the Franciscan Sisters and I loved showing up at Sal’s for any reason! The Franciscan Sisters are deeply saddened by Dale’s death, but we rejoice with him in his new abundant life! Sail on Dale and thank you for how you blessed me and many others!
It will not ever be the same walking into Sal’s again. We are sure going to miss you Dale! Kyle and Bip please keep up Dale’s home made buns and his great pizzas and especially his Chicken Wild Rice Soup. You guys are strong and I know you will get through all of this. We will always be here for you.
Dale was the original Diversity & Inclusion executive. He welcomed everyone to the experiential human petri dish called Sals. We made lots of questionable decisions there but what we remember most is the relationships that were formed. Dale will live in the hearts and memories of all Johnnies and Bennies as the forever host of last call Piano Man.
There is only one Dale. He valued relationships and was an iconic man who was such a huge part of our lives then and now. Thank you to the entire Schneider family for all the ways big and small you have been a part of our journey. Pax.
So sorry for your loss. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts. We always went to sals and he was a character in so many peoples lives
I am so very sorry for your loss, Craig & Becca, and my sympathies to the entire family.
Prayers and Blessings always.
So sorry for your loss. Have been a customer since the 70s and was there Friday and everyone was so nice. Would never know this would happen the next day. One never knows Myco dole es to Family and friends.
My class was in our freshman year when the drinking age changed, so we were the last class he got a see A LOT OF! Yet still I was amazed when I came up to CSB for my 20 year class reunion and he remembered me. I can’t recall if he remembered my name but I know that because he started naming off some of my friends! Great guy and one of the reasons I have such fond memories of living in St Joseph and going to College of St Benedict back in the 80s. So sad to hear of his passing ~
Dale was the kindest man, always looking out for the college students. He always had time to make a burger and chat a little. I took my parents to Sal’s when they came up for graduation. Thanks for the memories and may he rest in peace. Sue Devoy CSB ’84

Dale was an icon in St. Joseph. He provided memories and brought the community together in ways that will never be forgotten. His kindness, gentle demeanor and generosity was a testament to the great man he was. He is also survived by any Bennie or Johnnie that stepped foot into Sal’s. We are so sorry for your loss. May the perpetual light shine upon you, Dale.
Dale and Sal’s were some of my memories at SJU. Dale always had a big grin and loved Sal’s and his regulars there.
While at St. John’s, a few of us formed a college band freshman year. Dale helped us buy equipment for the band and booked us for gigs at Sal’s. He loved “doing business” and even fed us his prized pizzas while we set up for the show.
Dale was one of a kind, and college life in St. Ben’s/St. John’s won’t be the same without him. Thanks for everything, Ed and Gary (Ten16east) class of 1989.
Dale was one of the most generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. His friendly smile was always warm and welcoming. His soups were incredible. He will be missed by so many. Rest, our friend.
Incredibly sad and sorry to hear of Dale’s passing. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family. Thank you Dale, and Kyle, for the many memories that have been made at Sal’s over the years. Dale and Kyle have been a part of that.
