Steve was born January 30, 1968 in St. Cloud, MN to John “Jack” and Lucile (Schwankl) Kalkman. He graduated Cathedral High School in 1986 and North Dakota State University in 1991 with a BS in Environmental Design and a BA in Architecture. He married Joan Kuch December 30th, 1995 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud. They relocated to Pensacola, FL in April, 2010 where Steve was employed by STOA Architects.
Early in his career, Steve valued the mentorship of Fred Wemlinger and Pat Waddick who were instrumental in developing his architectural talents. His work included St. Cloud projects, Granite City Food and Breweries across the U.S., and military bases throughout the southern states. His most recent work was in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where Steve was involved with the high rise developments of a multi-family residential complex, office buildings, and mixed-use Cultural Center.
Steve was a gentle soul, brought joy and compassion to life, and courage and dignity to death. His love for life nourished numerous passionate friendships in Minnesota, Florida, Germany and Brazil. He was an active member of his church, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Sertoma Club. Steve opened his home to high-school exchange students from many countries, and Riverbats baseball players.
Steve was a talented artist—worked in the mediums of pencil, paper and canvas. He dabbled in metals and created his wedding rings and cross necklaces for his wedding party. He concluded his life with a book he wrote and illustrated to pass on his legacy to family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.
Steve’s love for travel took him to many states within the U.S., Brazil, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and many countries throughout Europe.
Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Joan; daughter, Helen (Barry) Schommer of St. Cloud; grandchildren Grace, Isaiah, Charity, and Hope Schommer; mother Lucile Kalkman of Sartell; brothers and sisters, Cindy (Mike) Hoene of Ft. Myers FL, James (Debbie) Kalkman of Winfield IL, David (Debbie) Kalkman of Gardner KS, Charles (Sharon) Kalkman of Sartell, John (Karen) Kalkman of Sauk Rapids, Paul (Gaily) Kalkman of Sherwood OR, Mary Kalkman of Burnsville, Joseph (Cathy) Kalkman of Eagan, and William “Bill” (Marcia) Kalkman of Gilbert AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
