Bob was born on June 20, 1923 in Washington D.C. to the late Herbert H. and Marguerete (Hiteshew) Insley. He attended Bethesda Chevy Chase High School where he met the love of his life Betty Hughes, whom he noticed at a high school basketball game. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 and served on a minesweeper in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged in 1945, returned home and began attending Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. The family then moved to Royal Oak, Michigan, where their son, Donald was born. While in Michigan he spent his entire career with Champion Spark Plug Company and retired after 33 years as Director of Engineering and Research. In 1988, Betty and Bob moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where they enjoyed many years of golf, bridge, beaching and volunteering. They moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota in 2009 to be closer to their son.

Bob’s love of research led him to create and host a tour of Civil War sites in Port Royal Plantation on Hilton Head Island for the Coastal Discovery Museum, as well as tide and beach tours.

Prayers and love for the loss of a great father.

My deepest and most sincere condolences to my high school BF, Pat, her wonderful sister Susie, and all their family. Their Dad’s influence on the family was immeasurable and the dedication shown by all 3 siblings to caring for their parents these pa3st several years, is a testemony to the love that binds a family. I have many special memories of the Insley’s and treasure them all. The Grace and Goralczyk families send their sympathy and prayers to all of you.

Mr. Insley was the father of my best friend from college, Patti. As such, he brought me a lot of joy with his sense of humor and quick wit. Both Patti’s parents were wonderful to me and I honor both of them. Patti, Susie, Donnie, my condolences for the loss of your dad. Take good care of yourselves. Patti, I love you. Peace be with your entire family. (Hi to Sam.)

Our condolences and love to all.

Pat, I am so sorry for your loss. You and the rest of the Insley family are in my prayers. God bless,
Bob Scheppegrell

My sincere sympathy to you and your family, Pat!
