Reverend Paul Joseph Zylla

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Cloud for Reverend Paul Joseph Zylla, age 93 of St. Cloud who passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at Presbyterian Homes: Founders Ridge Community in Bloomington. The Most Reverend Donald J. Kettler, Bishop of St. Cloud will preside. Burial will take place at Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.

Visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and after 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at the Cathedral of St. Mary, St. Cloud. The St. Cloud Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Father Pierz Assembly #530 will stand Honor Guard. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cathedral of St. Mary.

Reverend Paul Joseph Zylla was born on September 12, 192l, in Saint Cloud, Minnesota. He was the son of Peter and Theodosia Gapinski Zylla. Father Zylla attended Saint John Cantius Grade School and Cathedral High School, Saint Cloud. He received his seminary training at Crosier Seminary, Onamia and Saint Paul Seminary, Saint Paul. He was ordained on September 2, 1945, at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Saint Cloud, by The Most Reverend Joseph F. Busch. He celebrated his First Mass on September 3, 1945 at Saint John Cantius Church, Saint Cloud.
Father Zylla served in the following parish assignments: associate pastor, Assumption, Morris, September 1945 – September 1946; Holy Angels, St. Cloud, September 1946 – July 1947 and July 1948 – July 1949; administrator, St. Wendelin, Luxemburg, January 1965 – September 1965; pastor, Mary of Immaculate Conception, Rockville, July 1970 – July 1982; Holy Trinity, Royalton, July 1982 – July 1996. Father Zylla retired on July 10, 1996.

Father Zylla attended the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. July 1947 – July 1948; Angelicum University, Rome, July 1949 – June 1951. He was an instructor for Cathedral High School, July 1948 – 1949, and professor at St. John’s Seminary, August 1951 – August 1960. Father Zylla served as Vice Chancellor, October 1960 – March 1968; Chancellor, March 1968 – July 1970. He also served as a member of the Diocesan Tribunal and was a Censor Librorum for the Diocese of Saint Cloud, 1960 – 1975. He was Dean of the Cold Spring Deanery from August 1976 – December 1982.

Father Zylla was the Pro-Life Director of the Diocese from 1970 – 1992, he was a columnist for the St. Cloud Visitor’s “Pro-Life Corner” from 1976 – 1992, he served as a member of the Ecumenical Commission from 1968 – 1971 and as Officialis for the Matrimonial Tribunal from 1970 – 1975.

Father Zylla is survived by his brother, Sylvester “Sy”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Theodosia Zylla; and brothers, Alexander, Daniel and Peter; sisters, Helen Kurr, Mary Zylla and Virginia Zylla.
