Reverend Donald William Rieder

June 13, 1924 – May 18, 2013

Reverend Donald William Rieder was born on June 13, 1924, in Saint Cloud, MN. He was the son of John and Susan Hoffman Rieder. He attended Saint Mary’s Grade School and Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, MN. He then attended Saint Cloud State, Saint Cloud, MN and Saint John’s University, Collegeville, MN. He received his seminary training at
Saint John’s Seminary, Collegeville, MN. He was ordained on June 4, 1955, in Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Saint Cloud, MN by The Most Reverend Peter W. Bartholome. He celebrated his First Mass on June 5, 1955, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Saint Cloud, MN

Father Rieder served in the following assignments: associate pastor, St. Mary’s, Alexandria, June 1955-September, 1958; pastor, St. James, Randall; September 1958-December 1964; St. Anne’s, Kimball, December 1964-June 1969; Assumption, Morris, June 1969-June 1970; St. Agnes, Roscoe, June 1970-July 1971; St. Louis, Paynesville, July 1971-July 1976; Chaplain St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls, August, 1977-July 1984; Administrator, St. Stanislaus, Sobieski, March 1980-July 1985; pastor, St. John Cantius, St. Cloud, July 1985-July 1995. Father Rieder retired July 12, 1995.

While serving in parishes, Father Rieder was also a Chaplain in the reserves of the U.S. Army 1957 until 1962. Father Rieder served as Director of Continuing Education for priests in 1985. Father Rieder also served as a Chaplain at St. Cloud Hospital for many years.

Father Rieder died on May 18, 2013, at St. Benedict’s Senior Community, St. Cloud, MN. A Vigil Service will be held on May 21, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 22, 2013, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud, MN at 11:00 a.m. with The Most Reverend John F. Kinney presiding. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud, MN. Visitation will be Tuesday (Today) from 4:00 until 8:00 PM and on Wednesday after 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Cathedral, St. Cloud.

Father Rieder is survived by a brother, Robert, Rochester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Edward, Walter, Harold, Lawrence, Norbert, and John, and sisters, Alma, Margaret, Dorothy, Lucille, and Kathleen.
