Marie was born August 16, 1918. She grew up on a farm near the small town of Petersburg, Nebraska. She was the youngest of the ten children of George F. and Maria (Batliner) Winkler. In her teenage years, Marie played piano in a band with her brother Michael. They played in small towns throughout the Midwest. In the early 40’s Marie moved to St. Cloud, MN where she met Edward Loven from Swanville, MN. They married in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma while Edward was serving in the Marine Corps. Marie returned to St. Cloud and worked as a waitress at the Spaniol Hotel until Edward returned from the war. They raised two children, Sandra and Gary in St. Cloud.
Marie worked most of her life. She acquired knowledge of fabrics and sewing while working at JC Penney and Tempo in St. Cloud. Marie recognized there was an opportunity in quilting and bridal fabrics, sewing machines and seamstress services. She then opened Loven’s Fabrics with her son Gary in 1974. The store became a recognized leader in providing home-town personalized sewing and bridal services.
Marie had many talents and accomplishments in her work and personal life. She was a breast cancer survivor of 50 years. At an early age she learned to play the piano. She loved playing and listening to music throughout her life. Family and friends enjoyed hearing her play old songs from the 30’s. She was also an avid bowler and gardener and a volunteer driver for the Sisters of St. Benedict and the Poor Clare Sisters of Sauk Rapids. She was devoted to her family and loved cooking for them. Her homemade vegetable soup was a favorite. To Marie’s five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren she will always be “Granny”.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Edward, her parents, her son-in-law Al Bogart, and her brothers and sisters Frank Winkler, William Winkler, Michael Winkler, Andrew Winkler, Henry Winkler, George Winkler, Lille Winkler Thompson and Clara Winkler Haave. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Bares (Jim) of Sauk Rapids, MN and son Gary Loven (Mary) of St. Cloud, MN.
In her final years Marie was lovingly cared for at St. Benedict’s Care Center in St. Cloud. In her final days she was also devotedly cared for by Centra Care Hospice.

So sorry for your loss. She taught me a great deal about fine fabrics. Her expertise has not been forgotten.
RIP Marie Loven.

Mary and Gary – the prayers of your Benedictine Sisters from the1540 House – next to your dear parents. I am one of a few remaining Sisters who lived next to your folks in the 70’s and 80’s who would remember your parents and especially your dear Mother. She and I shared “sewing secrets” when we sisters lived next door to your folks.
I regret that I did not see the obituary in time to come to the wake.
Blessings and prayers, Sister Colleen Haggerty, OSB

Dearest Sandy,
So sorry for your loss. Carol let me know today. I am sorry that I can not be there. I just brought Arnie home from the hospital today after having knee replacement on Monday.
Jan
