Cy was born on January 27, 1939 in Holdingford, Minnesota to the late Stephen and Margaret (Witte) Valerius. He grew up in St. Augusta and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1957. He started working at the St. Cloud Book Shop during high school and was employed there for nine years. Cy married Joan M. Stang on July 10, 1962 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. Cy started his printing career with Volkmuth Printers in the mid 60’s. He retired from the printing industry in 1999. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622, Central Minnesota Woodworkers Association and the St. Augusta American Legion Post #621. He also volunteered his time driving Disabled American Veterans which he enjoyed immensely.

Cy enjoyed fishing, woodworking (making sawdust), and spending time with family and friends. Cy was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his strong faith and his devotion to St. Peregrine – the patron saint of cancer.

Cy is survived by his wife, Joan of St. Cloud; children, Paul of St. Cloud, Tom (Tina) of New Munich, Mike (Nancy) of St. Joseph, Mary (Jeff) Botz of St. Joseph; five grandchildren, Josh and Jaden Valerius, Ellie, Carter and Alaina Botz; and siblings, Donald Valerius, Marie Sisco, Doris DeMark, James (Ruth) Valerius, Zita (Tom) Hamann and Anita (Mark) Longtin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Joe Valerius.

A special thank you to Dr. Patrick Lalley, the staffs of Quiet Oaks Hospice House and CentraCare Hospice- “especially Tami and Steve”.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

We are so very saddened to hear of Cy’s passing. We are honored and grateful to have known him, and to have had him in our lives during our time in the St. Cloud area. The memories we cherish are of a great man, always with an embracing smile and a quick wit. Your thoughts are with you Joannie and the family. Cy rests in peace.

Cy taught me the ropes of printing when we started working together on my companies projects in the mid-80’s. He was so patient and answered all my questions in detail.
I’ve never met another person like him. He was so kind, smart and funny all wrapped up in the same package! He loved his family with a fervor and talked of his children/grand children and sweet wife Joan always with that twinkle in his eye.
I will certainly miss him and his recent email forwarding.
I’m sure he’s smiling down on us all and creating laughter above.

Cy was one of the kindest and loving people I have known in my life. He never spoke a bad word about anyone. When he spoke to you he always made you feel like what you had to say mattered. My thoughts are with his family and hope that their pain will soon pass. Knowing you all have an angel looking out for you and keeping you safe.

Such a wonderful, wonderful man. He’ll be sorely missed by so many.

I remember my mom, Rosemary Kruger (then writer/copy editor for the St. Cloud Visitor) and dad Ted, often mentioning Cy and Volkmuth Printers when they printed The St. Cloud Visitor. Father Dan Taufen was editor and the paper started printing locally. I believe the Volkmuth crew and the Visitor clan were great friends, going out to dinner quite often after the “paper was put to bed.” My sympathy to the family.

To the entire Valerius family. We are very sorry for your loss. Cy was an awesome man! Mary, oddly enough, just the other day I was thinking about the times when I would sleep over at your house and Cy would take us to Kays Kitchen; he would read the paper while you and I would sit and giggle. Seems like yesterday. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. God bless.

Joan and Family – Know that you are in our prayers during this very sad and difficult time. Cy was such an amazing man who touched so many lives. We are so blessed to call him, and you, “Our Friend.” May you find comfort in your family and friends and over time, find Peace. Love – Aggie & Al
